Regardless of being at an otherwise healthy weight, many patients struggle with what is commonly called a “double chin.” This can be due to a range of factors, including genetics or the effects of aging as normal fat stores droop lower in the face. While in the past surgery was the only option to resolve the appearance of a double chin, known by plastic surgeons as submental fullness, today patients can remove stubborn fat from the area using an injectable known as Kybella. In the Detroit area, Dr. Rifai and the master injectors at Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery offer excellent results with Kybella.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is a unique injectable product that permanently reduces fat below the chin. The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring acid that safely breaks down fat cells. The Kybella treatment involves a series of injections to the chin and neck area to permanently metabolize and remove these fat cells. The result is a defined jawline and permanent reduction of a double chin.
The Kybella Injection Procedure
Kybella injections can be completed quickly in our comfortable office. First, your master injector will mark the injection site. As needed, the area may be numbed to maintain your comfortable. Then, a series of injections are made. Patients may receive about 20 injections per treatment session. On average, a total of six treatment sessions are required to reach ideal results, though some patients may require fewer injections overall to reach their cosmetic goals. A custom treatment plan for you can be discussed during your consultation.
Who is a Candidate for Kybella?
Most patients who have a double chin and are over the age of 18 are good candidates for Kybella. However, the treatment is only appropriate for patients who have submental fullness due to genetics or aging, not those who are generally overweight. Before choosing Kybella, it is important to be at a healthy and stable weight. Patients should also have no infections in the treatment area and be free from health concerns or conditions such as difficulty swallowing, bleeding problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and more. Finally, Kybella patients should generally have good skin elasticity in the treatment area. Prior to receiving Kybella injections, your health history will be reviewed to ensure you are a suitable candidate.

Meet Dr. RifaiAfter Kybella Injections
Kybella injections require no downtime, and patients can immediately return to their normal routines. Some side effects can include slight swelling, redness, and bruising. The area may also feel tender. Kybella takes some time to take effect as the active ingredients gradually kill fat cells, which are then naturally metabolized. Most patients begin to see results after two to four treatment sessions.
Kybella results are generally permanent as fat cells do not regenerate. Realistic expectations can be discussed during your consultation appointment.
