A facelift is one of the most popular and widely-known plastic surgery procedures, and for good reason. Over time, it is normal for patients to see signs of aging on the face and neck, such as wrinkles, sagging, and skin laxity. Patients who notice these concerns on the lower two-thirds of the face especially often make good candidates for a facelift procedure. Dr. Rouchdi Rifai has years of experience providing excellent facelift results through the use of advanced surgical techniques. After a facelift with Dr. Rifai at Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery, Detroit area patients can enjoy a rejuvenated and youthful appearance for years to come.
What is a Facelift?
A facelift is a surgical procedure that reduces excess loose skin and fat while tightening the underlying tissues of the lower portions of the face as well as some of the neck. Facelifts are intended to rejuvenate the neck, jawline, cheeks, and surrounding areas, addressing several common signs of aging. These concerns include:
- Mid-face sagging and drooping
- Creases and wrinkles around the mouth, through the cheeks, or just below the eyes
- Excess fat in the lower face, jawline, or neck
- Jowls
- The appearance of a “double chin”
The Facelift Procedure
Facelifts are customizable procedures, with surgical plans varying to meet each patient’s unique needs and goal results. Facelift surgeries are performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are typically made around the hairline from the temple area and extending behind the ears. However, multiple incision patterns are possible depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient’s goals. Dr. Rifai will make incisions strategically to minimize visible scarring. Through incisions, the excess skin and fat are removed from the area and the deeper tissues of the face and neck are repositioned for a smoother and more youthful appearance. Addressing deeper tissues in this way allows Dr. Rifai to avoid the “frozen” look typical of facelifts of the past. With these steps complete, incisions can then be closed using sutures.
Patients seeking less dramatic changes from their facelifts may be candidates for a mini facelift, which involves smaller incisions and less manipulation of the tissues. During a consultation, these options can be discussed.
Who is a Candidate for a Facelift?
Most candidates who are concerned about sagging or drooping skin, wrinkles, poorly-defined jawlines, jowls, and other common signs of aging in the lower face and neck areas are good candidates for a facelift. During a consultation, Dr. Rifai will review your concerns to determine whether you are best suited to this type of surgery. In addition, patients should be in good overall health. Dr. Rifai will review your health history to ensure that you can safely undergo the surgery.

Meet Dr. RifaiRecovery After a Facelift
Facelifts are typically outpatient procedures, meaning patients can immediately return home with a trusted caregiver. Most patients require one to two weeks of downtime to rest and recover before returning to normal routines. Typically, facelift patients feel only minimal discomfort as they recover, as medication can be prescribed to maintain their comfort through the healing process. Common symptoms include redness, swelling, and bruising. In most cases, patients see their facelift results beginning about four to six weeks after the surgery as the majority of swelling subsides.
